Fernanda Gomes

ARTE BRA Fernanda Gomes was developed in constant dialogue with the artist. Unlike other books in the collection, which prioritize the relationship between text and image, this volume presents sets of images from significant exhibitions held by the artist between 2011 and 2012. Critic and curator Paulo Venancio Filho was invited to write the book’s unpublished text. Following Fernanda’s career since the 1980s, he has authored several texts on her work. In Inhabiting the Space, he reflects on different aspects of her production, particularly her relationship with materials—rescued from disposal, disuse, and abandonment—reinterpreted with refinement and reintroduced into the world in a new condition. The republished text is by Lóránd Hegyi. The interview was conducted in the artist’s studio in December 2014, with the participation of writer and professor Fernando Gerheim, critic and curator Felipe Scovino, collection coordinator Luiza Mello, and artist Julia Pombo. The conversation explored Fernanda’s creative process, the relationship between life and art, color and light, and the importance of space. The richly illustrated chronology highlights the many exhibitions held by the artist since the beginning of her career, both in Brazil and internationally. This publication aims to open a small crack of light, allowing more people to see and discover the work of this important Brazilian artist.
